Metal Steel Buildings Are Here To Stay

Monday, January 24th, 2011

In this day and age where bigger, faster, and stronger is better it is not at all surprising to find that there are more and more metal steel buildings being constructed. Over the holidays, my family and I decided to stay over at a friend’s condo in the heart of the city to get a chance to go around and see the sights. Living in a rural area where farms abound, it was not common for us to see skyscrapers standing so close to one another.

What surprised me the most was the number of constructions going on in one small area. While it was a commercial and business district where multinational companies had offices, it was still surprising to see that metal steel buildings in various stages of completion. We were there for just a little over two weeks and the building constructions were going on round the clock. I did not realize how quick it was to build a steel building!

Compared to one made of other materials, steel metal buildings took about half the time to finish. I found out why: they come in mostly pre fabricated, pre punched and ready for the next phase of construction. It was also easier to customize these kinds of buildings in terms of insulation and interior design. No wonder they are now considered king of the construction sites.

Exterior Wall Painting Tips: Color Combinations

Monday, January 24th, 2011

People think that painting houses is easy. Just choose a bucket of paint and slap them everywhere and voila, you’re done! Unfortunately it’s not that simple. House painting needs serious concentration and careful calculation, most especially if you’re painting the exterior of your home. It’s very important that you get this right since the exterior of your home is the first thing that people see and it often makes a lasting impression on them. So even if your home has wall to wall carpets and expensive furnishings but you scrimped on your exterior wall painting, the overall effect would still be disappointing.

One of the first things that you should consider when doing exterior wall painting is your color combination. You have to be very careful that the colors do not clash, nor should the color shades be to close to each other. As much as possible, go for safe complimentary colors. Using basic colors such as white, brown, and tan as your outlining color is also a advisable. Take note too that these colors are ideal for the horizontal surfaces of your home’s exteriors. Since awnings, terrace borders, etc need an extra coat or two of paint, having them in neutral colors will make sure that they don’t stand out too much and overpower your main paint color.

Kitchen Flooring Options: I Choose Tiles

Monday, January 24th, 2011

There are plenty of kitchen flooring options available in the market nowadays, and it’s giving me a difficult time choosing just one for my kitchen remodeling project. A couple of years after buying our first home, I now find the kitchen to be very small and cramped. I’ve accumulated quite a number of kitchen appliances – the extra freezer, the new oven – and there’s simply no more space to move around in the kitchen anymore. I’ve decided to knock down the wall and expand the kitchen.

Of course, this meant that there would be more floor space to work on. Since the kitchen flooring we had was already several years old, I thought that it was also time to have the kitchen flooring replaced so that people would not be able to tell where the old kitchen space was and where the extension started. Choosing kitchen tiles took me longer than the actual renovation. I finally decided on the classic, but still very practical kitchen tiles for several reasons.

First, having tiles as the kitchen flooring made it very easy to clean and disinfect. Tiles are also resistant to water and oil, so in case there are spills (which is inevitable in a working kitchen) it would be easy to wipe off and clean up with just soap and water. Second, there are textured tile floors which lessen the likelihood of slips and accidents. This is very important especially if you are carrying a boiling pot of stew. Finally, there’s the cost. Kitchen floor tiles were on sale that week and for the life of me, I could not pass up on a great discount!

Bathroom Furniture For Transients

Monday, January 24th, 2011

It’s always fun to buy or design bathroom furniture for your home. From the bathroom storage cabinets to the vanity sets, to the baskets and racks and shelves – everything can be personalized to the home owner’s preference and liking. Sometimes, it eats up a chunk of your home improvement budget, true, but the final outcome is always very fulfilling and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Unfortunately if you’re a transient, a student, or someone living in a small rented space for short periods of time, this is something that you cannot fully enjoy – or can you? Just because you don’t really own the bathroom doesn’t mean you can’t your own furniture. There are plenty of bathroom furniture which are portable, lightweight and inexpensive – perfect for students or transients. These are items which you can just pick up and take with you when you leave or move to your next place of residence.

You can make use of wicker baskets to keep fresh towels, robes and hand towels; smaller ones can be used to hold small toiletry items. You can even use this as an overnight kit of sorts – it can hold your toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, soap and shampoo and you can just pick it up and shove it inside your bag if you’re in a rush. Finally, there are cloth organizers – which are small shelves which you can hang from a bar. It folds easily and can be used over and over again.

I Want Wine Cooler Cabinets!

Monday, January 24th, 2011

It’s a little late to make a Christmas wish, but I still have something on my list that I really want to have: wine cooler cabinets. It’s not your common kitchen appliance or equipment but I really think that my family will have good use for it. For one, we love good wine. No family dinner or gathering is complete without a couple of bottles of vino. We’re really not after the overly expensive ones, since that’s way out of the family budget, but we know how to appreciate good wine. We’ve tried Australian, South African and lately – Chilean wines, which proved to be a pleasant discovery.

As amateurs, we already know the importance of storing wine properly in order to keep it fresh for a longer period of time. Since it’s impractical to dig up a wine cellar, I thought a wine cooler cabinet would be the next best thing. This way, no one will make the mistake of storing our bottles of wine next to the balsamic vinegar and opening that by mistake. Yes that really happened, and although it was hilarious at first, this made us finally decide that we really should have a separate wine storage space at home.

Buying The Best Hair Straighteners

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Even naturally straight hair does not look super straight when you wake up in the morning or after you shower. It needs styling aids and equipment to tame even the most stubborn frizz and fly away. One of the most popular styling aids nowadays are the hair straighteners. Unlike blow dryers, hair straighteners actually iron hair from the top of your hair down to the very end, resulting to a more shiny yet very straight mane of hair. If you add the right styling product, the straight appearance of your hair will hold for the rest of the day, or evening as the case may be.

Straighteners are not every expensive, but there are of course brands which are a bit more pricey than others. These are what they call professional hair straighteners and are considered as the best hair straighteners in the market because they were developed and are actually used by professional stylists themselves. It would be wise to invest on one of these if you’re someone who doesn’t want to risk her hair on generic products. The good thing about these professional level hair styling equipment is that they come with a product warranty as well as a manual or guide on how it should be used.

As a bonus, you’ll even receive a dvd containing different professional looking hair styles you can do with your hair straightener.

Tips for Garage Organization

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Nobody likes a messy and cluttered garage. For one it’s pretty difficult to back in and out of the garage when you have plenty of stuff lying around. And two, it’s highly unsafe for everyone living inside the house – not just children and the elderly. The garage area is most often than not used for mechanical or woodworking projects, and so there might be loose nails, staples, or oil left from an earlier activity. This is all the more dangerous if you have very young children who might wander out to the garage by accident and pick up oils, lubes and other stuff you may have there.

Organizing the contents of your garage is not easy, but it can be done if you use the proper garage organization tools. Garage storage products are widely available and they are also easy to order online. If you want something more special, you can have one customized so that the make and shape or your garage is taken into consideration. You can have overhead stows for large cartons and boxes which you don’t want to throw away yet; or if old pieces of furniture which you aren’t using at the moment.

The built in shelves and cabinets on the other hand, are ideal for storing tools, car cleaning and maintenance equipment, as well tools for gardening. This way, pesticides, fertilizers and other potentially harmful substances are kept away from children and you would not have to worry about them accidentally ingesting them.

Buying Newborn Baby Swings

Monday, January 24th, 2011

One of the first things I had wanted to buy after my daughter was born was a baby swing simply because I had one as a child. Where I come from, it was the norm to lull a baby to sleep on a baby swing, but back then the swings were operated manually. Every time the child whimpers or cries, the parent or sitter would just give the swing a few gentle nudges and the baby would instantly go back to peaceful slumber.

Naturally, I wanted a newborn baby swing for my little princess. I had no trouble finding different models and makes online but was pleasantly surprised to see that they now had baby swing models that could be adjusted for use for different stages. For example, there are models which have adjustments for newborns to when the baby is able to hold her head up; to toddler age when the baby is already very active. The bars and straps are the ones that vary from stage to stage, as well as the height and angle of the baby swing.

Compared to other baby swings, this kind costs a bit more but I was thinking that my baby would be able to use it much longer – maybe until she is about three years old. I also checked and saw that it was manufactured by a very reliable brand, so I became confident that the baby swing is not only safe to use, but was really built to last!
